Vancouver Street Stories project nearly launched!

Our Fraser Street plaques project is nearly launched! – click for larger
It's been a year in the making. Starting with an idea, a few emails, a chat with a historian, with city staff and hours of toil by our community star Lilli, the "Vancouver Street Stories" project is about to launch.
Many of you will have seen these historical plaques attached to lamp standards around Vancouver. In 2000 a series of them were hung as part of a Millennium project. So what makes ours different?
First, they're focused (almost) on one area of Vancouver – Fraser Street. As a measure of our neighbourhood pride and our goal to acknowledge our past, our plaques will appear along Fraser Street starting at the intersection of Kingsway and continue as far south as East 45th avenue.
Second – and this is pretty cool – each plaque will have its own QR code, which is a Vancouver first! QR codes are now seen on many different products and advertisements. It's a symbol that you can scan with a smart phone camera to be pointed to a spot on the internet. Why is that great? Well, there you can not only find more information, but you can leave a comment or share via Twitter of Facebook!
One of the key goals of the Vancouver Street Stories project was to bring communities together. The point of having a blog and social media links will be for people to connect in their own community.
The Vancouver Mountain View Neighbourhood Group is sponsoring this project, with the assistance of the Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House and other municipal granting agencies. We'll be hosting a ribbon cutting community event in the weeks ahead, so be sure to stay tuned!

Thanks to all who helped make our block party a success!
See a photo slideshow from our 11th Annual Block Party on Sept. 10th
It was another great event for the Mountain View Neighbourhood, with perfect weather and delicious food supplied by the legendary Memphis Blues eatery, as well as additional supplies from our new local grocery on Fraser Street – No Frills (Thanks, Dean!) and yummy ice cream.
Our committee made up of Sharole, Jackie, Lilli, Pete & Mike would like to thank many others for their participation.
Thank you to Laura, Mark and Yasmine who helped me man the pulled pork station for the day. Thanks to those who stayed behind and helped with the clean up. We left no trace we were there – which is good.
Both our MP Don Davies, and our MLA Mabel Elmore, came out to show support for our neighbourhood and join in the festivities
Fraser Court Seafood Restaurant kindly stopped by with 3 trays of specialty rice and noodles and Clare from Indulgences Desserts dropped off a lovely tray of exquisite sweeties. Thank you to both.
The entertainment provided by the Polynesian dancers and Diego were enthusiastically received. Thanks to Rani Wangsawidjaya and her crew! Big applause also to Lauren Kwan, LedMac's marketing coordinator who came out with the icecream truck!
Kelly Woods from Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House came out to share some fun. Cedar Cottage is a very supportive partner who helps us manage funding for our various projects, including the annual block party.
Two representatives from the South Vancouver Community Policing Centre stopped by to hand out pamphlets and reminders to call in any suspicious activity you see ongoing in the neighbourhood. They are more than willing to add a problem area to their rounds. The Community Policing office number is 604-717-2940.
Finally, special thanks to John Atkin, historian and his wife Robin Naiman from COV Mountain View Cemetery for attending and chatting with folks.

Fraser Street hip? Whaaa?
Fraser Street hasn't looked this hip for decades!
The Century development at 4550 Fraser Street just from its sheer size alone was going to shape the future of our community. It has brought a local grocery store within walking distance of most homes in the area, a Starbucks coffee shop (always a sign of civilization) and a Shoppers Drug Mart, all of which seem to be perpetually busy.
What the folks at Ledingham-McAllister decided to do was point out some of the hipness happening in our community with this truly sexy marketing video on YouTube.
It focuses on shops and restaurants like La Marche St. George, Les Faux Bourgeois, European Bakery, and The Outpost Café along with several others between Kingsway and 30th Avenue. While it's always good to be leary about hype or being "the next Main Street," we'll take the compliment nonetheless.
