Country Lane photos, August 2008

Our Country Lane is looking especially beautiful this summer, thanks to lots of warm sun and only occasional rain to keep everything green. Come by and see it if you haven't already - it's located south of 700-block East 27th (just east of Fraser Street).

A Greenspace in Mountain View

Hello! Welcome to Mountain View. Home of the friendly banners, the ‘friends across fences’, and a lovely little sustainable community.

People ‘round here like to walk places. Some of us buy organics at the farmer’s market. A few folks choose to support local businesses. Others are finding ways to make their homes more energy efficient. And lots of us practice natural lawn and garden care.

In many different ways, we’re all contributing to a healthy and sustainable community.

Country Lane opening thank you speech

As read by Sharole Tylor, member of the Mountain View Neighbourhood Association, Nov. 23rd, 2002

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to Mountain View and the christening of Vancouver's First Country Lane. I have the privilege of living on this lovely lane.

My neighbour, Jeannie Kamins, and I stood looking out over our gravel pit of a lane, several years ago, thinking we could do something with this. Even then we knew that it would take more than a couple of boxes of wild flower seeds to create what we had in mind.

The fates stepped in and introduced our neighbourhood to city planner Sandy James, who is a wealth of resources and an infinite supply of positive support. She listened to Jeannie & I, went away, and brought back Dave DesRochers, Streets Design Engineer.

Dave had come up with a radical lane treatment and needed somewhere to test it out. Thank you, Dave, for putting faith in a bunch of radicals from Mountain View to pull it off.

In came Wally Konowalchuk from Streets Design, and David Yurkovich from Greenways, who created a design and implementation plan to make the lane a reality. Both were open minded enough to let the residents make changes and ultimately build our own lane so we had a sense of ownership.

A very special thank you to Sandy, Dave, Wally, David & Don Brynildsen who gave up a Saturday, on their own time, to come out and help us build this lane.

To the Mayor and council, thank you for having the courage to support, in principal and financially, an alternate lane treatment. It's been a long time coming but now that it's here, there's no looking back.

Of course I owe a big debt of gratitude to my neighbours and friends in Mountain View who came out, once again, to help Sharole with yet another project. I think the thing that makes our neighbourhood so special is that we all have a desire to make our city a better place to live, starting with our little corner.

It never cease to amaze me what a huge amount of work can get done when you have a few industrious people with well stocked tool sheds and BBQs plus a few very supportive people in city hall. Look at what you can accomplish! You can make history.

Thank you.
