Another great KVS success in Vancouver Mountain View!

MOUNTAIN VIEW NEIGHBOURHOOD GROUP "KEEP VANCOUVER SPECTACULAR" – 2011 REPORT
Just a little background for those of you who don’t know what’s involved in being the KVS Event Coordinator. KVS has been an ongoing project for MV since 2001 and this will be my 4th year as the Coordinator. The City sends an email in April and I set up the date and arrange for the supplies such as pickers, bags and gloves to be dropped off at my home the day before the event. Afterwards a City vehicle will come to pick up the supplies plus the garbage that was collected.
About the beginning of May I send an email to our communications person, Alain F, and he sends it out to our MV list plus a reminder goes out the week before the event. As well, Mike K. puts it on the MV website (see footer for web address.)
I’d like to thank Catherine C. once again for doing up the posters and running off 40 copies so that about 10 days prior to the event I can go out and put them up on poles from 25th to 32nd and from Fraser to St. Catherines.
KVS is about picking up the neighbourhood - paper cups, bottles, cans, paper, cigarette butts, bits & pieces of small debris and scraps of what-have-you – it’s really about taking pride in your neighbourhood.
The day of the event the Coordinator’s job is to make sure that all areas, as described above, are assigned to people for pick up. Ideally we want to assign one person on each side of the street (or Avenue.) What we don’t want is too many people covering one section of our area, or groups going over an area that has already been assigned to other people, while others get missed entirely. Obviously for Fraser and the West lane groups of two per side is preferable.
I received a phone call from Rachel, who will be in the new Shopper’s makeup department, offering to bring some of their staff along with some bottled water and snack bars. In fact 11 Shopper’s employees attended. Thanks to: Rachel, Nemanja, Wendy, Lisa, Joselyn, Jodi, Tony, Sheila, Ruth, Dmitri and Maria.
Most of our regulars showed as well as some new faces. Thanks to: Catherine, Lilli, Mike, Chris, Andrea, Graham, Kelly (Cedar Cottage,) Paul, Chris, the Interim Pastor of Ruth Morton and the youngsters of some of the adults.
Special thanks to May and the Ruth Morton “cooks and organizers” who put on a BBQ for our work crew. What a nice surprise and a wonderful opportunity for the new Shoppers employees to get to meet some of the Fraser Street residents.
The amount of garbage picked up on KVS day is less and less every year so hopefully this means that residents are picking up on an on-going basis throughout the year. Congratulations to all of us.
Note: Shoppers Drug Mart, between 29th & 30th, intended date to open is June 14th.
Ruth Morton Neighbourhood Thrift Sale is Saturday, June 11th, 10am to 3pm at 27th & Prince Albert. Contact Rika at 604-708-0538 for details.
Ruth Morton Church is celebrating 100 years next year.
