A unique partnership between a housing developer and a community group has resulted in the third iteration of the Mountain View banners on Fraser Street. The Mountain View Neighbourhood Group and project partners Ledingham-McAllister and the Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House have invested in a community improvement project which will result in street banners flying down Fraser Street between East 23rd and East 31st Avenue.

The Mountain View Neighbourhood is located to the east of Fraser Street from King Edward Avenue to East 33rd.

“The Mountain View neighbourhood has proved again that a small group of community-minded citizens can take big steps to improve their surroundings,” says community member Mike Klassen. “We’re about to install our third set of street banners since 2002, and we look forward to how they will improve the look of the street for current residents as well as newcomers.”

Ledingham-McAllister is the developer of two mixed residential/commercial projects in the area, including “Century” and “Signature” a new townhouse development located in Mountain View. “We’ve been working in the Mountain View community now for several years during the stages of planning and development,” says John O’Donnell, Vice-President of Ledingham McAllister. “We’ve sensed the strong community pride here, and it’s been a pleasure to work with community members and support the banners project.”

The Mountain View Neighbourhood Group was created in 2000 to deal with growing crime in the community. The small group has since organized several community improvement projects, including wall murals, street mosaics, the Fraser Street banners, and a community website. The City’s Country Lane demonstration project was also built in the neighbourhood.

“It’s extremely pleasing to see the Fraser Street banners project continue, and demonstrate the pride we have in our community,” says community member Sharole Tylor. “The Fraser Street area is continually changing, and these banners help us to put our best face forward.”

Cedar Cottage Neighbourhood House is the non-profit partner of the banners project, as well as being involved in previous community efforts such as annual neighbourhood block parties.

Staff from the City of Vancouver streets operations is tasked with the installation of the latest Fraser Street/Mountain View banners in the next week. The Mountain View Neighbourhood Group is the only participant so far in the City of Vancouver’s “Neighbourhood Society Banners” classification.
