Teen's donation leads to new veterans' markers at cemetery

New markers to honour the previously unmarked graves of six veterans at Mountain View Cemetery will be put into place at a special ceremony this Saturday, according to a news release.
The markers were made possible by the efforts of 13-year-old Amanda Neil from Ladner, who raised $1,365 to pay for them by collecting bottles and donations. Last year, Amanda collected funds to buy one marker for a veteran's unmarked grave.
Amanda, along with her family, friends and various donors, will be on hand to place the new markers on the graves of: Edward Hamilton, Died at age 45, April 16, 1923; William A. Brown, Died at age 54, January 21, 1925; Joe Plecas, Died at age 38, March 10, 1925; David R. Lewis, Died at age 39, March 31, 1925; George Staples, Died at age 59, May 7, 1925; Charles Weller. Died at age 38, September 3, 1924.
Mountain View Cemetery is the final resting place of over 12,000 veterans. More than 920 of their graves still do not have a marker because the veterans' families couldn't afford one, or they didn't have relatives living in Vancouver at the time of their deaths.
