June 25th MVNA meeting minutes

Location: Colchi’s, 27th & Fraser, 10AM
Regrets: Moya, Sandi and Tom
Present: Janet, Bryan, Mike, Lilli, Sharole, Satminder, Elizabeth, Gwyneth, Stan, Alain & Jackie

The meeting was brought to order at 10:15 and chaired by Mike.

i. Business arising from the April 16th minutes: Tom has taken one of the small grant benches for 28th Avenue. There is approximately $140.00 leftover from the bench grant – Sharole suggested that it be put towards cementing the existing three benches. She will take the 4th bench for the North side of 28th Avenue if no one else wants it.

ii. The 28th Avenue (E. lane) curb has been repaired.

iii. An email was sent to cover (school) community hours done by Joshun and Serena.

Banner Update & Grants: Sharole reported that Niki has sent the application to the Gaming Commission. Sharole will submit one to Telus. She is in discussion with Susan Gordon of Parks Board who will talk to Bryan Newson about a subsequent proposal.

27th & Fraser Street Mosaics – Recently Sharole thanked Joel & Ingrid of the LMNHS for their fund handling. There are some leftover supplies and money for mosaics. Suggestion: mosaic tabletops or store-side signs, traffic circle. (Note: Gwyneth pointed out that traffic circles normally accepting mosaic tiles are recessed and tiles that are put on top and the tiles may be broken.)

Foot Patrol Report: Bryan & Janet spoke of the FP June 11th meeting and subsequent patrol dates: June 21, 30, July 12, 21, August 4, 19, 31, September 17 & 27th. Each month specific people will be responsible for the reminder phone call as well as either Captaining or assigning a Captain who will submit a report to the SVCP. Officially, two guests can accompany the foot patrol. Mike took the training course this past Thursday. The group got more serious about expired car licenses on Friday and six were reported.

Sharole saw a silver Honda, 2PM, Thursday, and a young woman joining the driver who then were seen shooting up in the stairwell at 709 E. 28th. She took the license number and reported it to 911. What about day patrols? It’s possible for spontaneous patrols to happen.

Lionel has suggested that we attach signs around the neighbourhood stating that we are foot patrolling 24/7. The SVCP thought it would be a great idea. Mark Jarvie has to check to see if we can attach them to the metal poles. Discussion: regarding what type of material to use, how to attach and how much money to spend.

Motion: Sharole/Gwyneth “That up to $350.00 can be spent on this project.” Carried.

Lionel will have to obtain quotes and work up a budget showing how many signs, what size, what the design/wording will be, what type of material, location and cost before the money will be disbursed. Stan suggested that Lionel might consider copywriting the design. Also, the MV web address should be at the bottom of the sign.

Litter & Grafitti: Mike has another year’s worth of paint from the City and he took some supplies to the Bayview and the owner had it painted out by the end of the day. Mike went around the neighbourhood and touched up other grafitti and took some supplies to the Beef Jerky business who promised to take care of their grafitti.

He spoke to the hydroponics store about outside garbage and that as part of the neighbourhood they are responsible for cleaning it up. Litter has been better recently.

Private Property Use – as per the City, if vehicles are still drivable (as in the van at the 2nd hand store) the City can’t do anything about it.

Over-grown grass on private property: call the City, Property Use Department, 604-873-7011, go through the switchboard, ask for Property Use and report it. They’ll contact the owner.

28th Avenue Traffic Circle: has been re-cemented after the sewer work and (thanks to) Moya and Frances were busy from 9:30 to 11:30 this morning to re-plant it.

In Diana’s and Niki’s absence – no report on Tupper Memorial Way or the Dog Poop Project.

August 21st MV 5th Anniversary BBQ-Grant Update: Lilli reported that we got a small grant in the amount of $345.00. Lilli will hold the money and produce an expenditures sheet after the BBQ has been held.

Satminder reported that she and Barbara Forster-Rickard also got a small grant for the same amount for a 31st Avenue party. Mark your calendars, Friday, October 14th, for a family event-dance to be held at the Capri Hall. They are looking for volunteer musicians. Sharole suggested getting in touch with her husband, Diego.

New/Old Business

Painted Quotes Project: Sharole is compiling a list of Canadian quotes and has a projector. We will need a committee to approach the businesses for permission.

Manny, the resident at the SW corner of 31st & Fraser has volunteered to keep the boulevard planter weeded.

Fraser Street Businesses – Clean Up Letters: Alain dropped off copies of translated literature for hand out to the businesses to encourage them to keep their area clean. Further to his suggestion that there be a business award are: possibility of a plaque, framed certificate or poster saying “this year’s winner”, take a picture of them and post on the website (free advertising for their business), possibly a cash stipend to be donated to a charity of their choice (this was not the most favorite suggestion.) Possibly leave this for the fall meeting.

The Committee to do personal delivery to the businesses will be: Lilli, Mike and Satminder. They will be given an information sheet that has been translated into their language plus a City pamphlet.

Gwyneth has suggested that when the emails are sent out and people are using the list from an original email and the subject has changed could we change the subject heading so that it is relevant to the discussion.

Country Lane – Sharole reported that the week of July 4th a new product will be installed in the center section of the Country Lane and then the neighbours will have to seed and water – an email will be forthcoming if they need help.

Old Chevron Site – SE Corner of 25th: the address will now be on King Edward, brick façade, 1920’s era look, residential/store front facing Fraser, archway, bay windows, terrace, patios off the lane, 6 retail parking spots, 50 resident under-ground spots.

Sharole will contact the architect and explain what we’re about and (as per Mike) would they consider a Welcome to MV sign or landmark.

Mike reports that the website links have been fixed.
